Center is able to allow children of

Haynes-Inman Education Center is part of the Guilford County School system in Jamestown, N.C. that opened it’s doors to the community in August 2010. The school was named after two influential people within the community. One was a student, Meredith Leigh Haynes, who touched the hearts of many people in the community. The other was Mrs. Bennie Lee Inman. She was a pioneer in educating young people with disabilities. She dedicated more than 30 years of her life to educating and training children with special needs while serving as the director of the Greensboro Center Palsy School. Haynes-Inman currently serves approximately 130 students between ages 2-22 with severe to profound cognitive and/or physical disabilities. Superior worked with the school to create a fun and safe inclusive outdoor playground for the students of Haynes- Inman. “I enjoyed the challenge of designing the playground at Haynes-Inman, Ellington said. “This play environment went beyond a typical inclusive design as it was created to meet the varied needs of the students,” she said. The solution consisted of an inclusive ramp structure that incorporates numerous educational playground panels such as the Gear Panel that students can interact with. Other great elements include an extra wide slide and an inclined crawl tunnel.

been a long time coming and the kids love it,” Principal Kevin Carr said.

This playground features bonded rubber mulch surfacing and a wide ramp from end-to-end that allows children in wheelchairs to access any part of the structure. There are numerous play panels accessible both on the structure and from the ground level. This gives children of all abilities the opportunity to play and interact with each other without restriction.

In addition to Haynes-Inman students, families also enjoy this playground on a regular basis.

“It’s a nice place for our families to come now. Siblings are able to play right along side each other because everybody can access it,” Carr said. The school’s physical therapists also benefit from the new playground. They help children with physical disabilities work their muscles by walking up and down the structure’s inclined ramps. “It’s been a fantastic thing and I’m so appreciative of the folks that listened and designed something that really meets the needs of Haynes-Inman,” Carr said.

All of their students are able to enjoy this playground, no matter their physical abilities.

This was a brand new structure added to Haynes-Inman. This school previously did not have an outdoor play environment.

“Just to see the smiles of their faces from the kids from 3 all the way up to 22 has just been amazing. Our teachers are happy, our parents are happy,” Carr said.

It’s not uncommon for students to have some behavior- related problems while in school, especially if they are unsure of what is expected of them. When punishment is the only reaction, children are not able to learn the necessary skills to make positive changes. To improve school safety and promote positive behavoir, Cambridge Elementary Magnet in Coco, Fla. became a Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) school in 2009. The school was recognized as a PBIS Silver Level Model School the following year for their proficiency at implementing PBIS.

Not only does recess have great physical benefits for children, it encourages social and emotional development and results in a more productive classroom.

Our SRP Certified Partner Advanced Recreational Concepts worked with the school to create a playground catered to the students’ developmental needs as well as their coastal environmental needs with corrosion-resistant recycled material. Children perform better in the classroom when they are able to play in an unstructured social environment. Research shows that children have optimal cognitive ability when they’re able to take a break from the classroom. Recess offers children time to engage and interact with each other. These interactions help children develop social and emotional skills. Research shows that children learn valuable communication skills including negotiation, cooperation, sharing, and problem solving while playing. Our recycled playgrounds are made from reclaimed post- consumer plastic products like milk jugs. It’s resistant to vandalism, corrosion, rotting, splitting, salt spray, marine borers, termites, oil, and fungus. It also looks and feels like wood without the unwanted maintenance. Additionally, our recycled material is manufactured with UV additives in order to prevent fading.

“It is a behavior program that aims to focus on awarding positive behavior and de-emphasizing corrective action for negative behavior,” Bookkeeper Christene Branham said.

PBIS strives to promote prevention over punishment. With this proactive approach, schools teach students positive behavior strategies. Their goal is to teach students those behaviors will have a positive impact on their academics and social lives. While this is done in the classroom, it’s also reinforced by having dedicated recess time for all students. “The new playground helped solve behavior problems and has more room for children to play. It’s contributed for a more productive classroom and the children are more cooperative when playing together,” Branham said.

shade to their carpool area, Country Lane Elementary sun protection to teachers and students.

FACT: By adding is able to provide

Oftentimes, a child’s experience arriving at school sets the tone for the day. Rain or extreme heat can cause a damper on the day. To provide sun and rain protection for students, Country Lane Elementary School in Broken Arrow, Okla. was in search of durable shade.

Our shade fabric is made of UV stabilized cloth. The cream fabric provides 74% shade cover and blocks 92% of harmful UV rays.

Not only have the shades improved the arrival and dismissal of students, it’s also improved safety on the school grounds. The shades create a designated area clearly visible so students know exactly where to go.

Our SRP Certified Partner Play by Design, Inc. worked with the school to incorporate customized suspended cantilevers for their carpool area and playground walkway.

The shades have benefitted Country Lane so much they decided to incorporate them in other schools in the district.

These shades take advantage of suspension braces at the top of the structure to support the extended shade. The cream color of these shade fabric was chosen to complement the existing design of the school building. With the growing awareness of the risk of skin cancer due to exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays, it’s important to choose shade that will not only alleviate heat, but provide UV protection as well.

“We have had such great success with the shade canopies we have them going up all over our [school] district,” Executive Director of Construction and Facilities Bob Tolomeo said.

Spinner that help children reach important developmental milestones.

There is a wealth of opportunities for children to be active during recess. Even though not all children play vigorously, they are able to choose their activities and play for the joy of it. Even minor movement helps children lower their risk of obesity and improves their quality of health. Recess is the perfect opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle by fostering good habits early. That’s exactly what Elm Street Elementary School in Newnan, Ga. did when they were in need of a new playground. After doing successful fundraising, the school was able to provide new play equipment for students in third through fifth grade.

This playground is designed to safely develop growing muscles, coordination, balance, and gross motor skills while also having fun. Children are engaged longer and encouraged to keep moving and exploring the multiple challenging components.

Our products are designed to go above and beyond to engage in targeted muscle groups.

The play value added to this school goes beyond the physical. It also allows for learning opportunities in social and emotional health through sharing, negotiating, and cooperation while playing. It’s important for children to cultivate a lifestyle of health and wellness, which is why they chose Superior’s durable and innovative physical play equipment that makes fitness fun!

Our SRP Certified Partner KorKat was able to provide them with an active play structure that fit their need to promote physical development in children.
